The Precinct of Amun-Re, also referred to as the Temple of Amun, is the largest of the temples and the only one open to the public today. The complex consists of four main parts: the Precinct of Amun-Re, the Precinct of Mut, the Precinct of Montu, and the Temple of Amenhotep IV. Today, the complex is a vast open-air museum and the largest ancient religious site in the world. An ancient place of worship for the god Amun, it was part of the monumental city of Thebes. This complex is comprised of a vast mix of decayed temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings. To emphasize height and distance and enhance an existing pathway, two obelisks flanking the entrance were built with the illusion that they were the same height-even though they weren’t. For example, a sanctuary shaped like an Anubis Jackal was used as a representational symbol of Anubis. Like other Egyptian structures, common techniques were the use of symbolism and illusionism. The Luxor temple was built with Nubian sandstone from south-western Egypt. There are six great temples: four on the left bank known as Goornah, Deir-el-Bahri, the Ramesseum, and Medinet Habu and two on the right bank known as the Karnak and Luxor. Luxor Temple is a large temple complex located on the east bank of the Nile River in what was ancient Thebes (today the city of Luxor). Starting with Hatshepsut, buildings were of a grander scale than anything previously seen in the Middle Kingdom. The wealth gained through military dominance created huge prosperity for Egypt and allowed for the proliferation of monumental architecture, especially works that glorified the pharaohs’ achievements. The New Kingdom is known as the golden age of ancient Egyptian history and is the period of Hatshepsut, Tutankhamun, Ramses II, and other famous pharaohs.

His name is Jake, but hers keeps changing, especially once they make it to the farmhouse and the weird family meal that awaits them. She is thinking of ending their relationship - they’ve only been going out for about seven weeks - but hasn’t worked up the gumption to do so yet. Based on Iain Reid’s 2016 novel (though with an unmistakable Kaufman twist), it starts out as a story about a young woman (Jessie Buckley) who is embarking upon a road trip with her boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to visit his parents (Toni Collette and David Thewlis) at their farmhouse. I loved I’m Thinking of Ending Things, which is about as Kaufman-esque a movie as you could hope for. In Charlie Kaufman’s world, in movies like Anomalisa and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Synecdoche, New York, our own narcissism and desperation to cure our loneliness conspire to form a maze from which we can never really escape. But while Kafka’s point is often social in nature, Kaufman’s is existential. They share a taste for the surreal and twisty they prefer you feel your way through their stories, rather than insisting on “solving” their plots like puzzles. In fact, Kaufman and Kafka aren’t entirely dissimilar. I’m still working up the courage to read it, for obvious reasons.) Since he first broke through in the 1990s, his style and themes have become so identified with him that it’s possible to call something “Kaufman-esque,” the way you might say something is “Kafka-esque.” (He also published his first novel this year, a 720-page doorstopper titled Antkind, about a failed film critic. He often plays with the form of the movies themselves, self-consciously flipping our expectations about truth and fantasy on their heads, which taught me, as a budding critic, how to look at a film as more than just its plot. Whether he’s writing screenplays for someone else or directing them himself, Kaufman has distinctive stylistic tics and thematic obsessions. Charlie Kaufman might be the reason I became a film critic, so of course I was excited for I’m Thinking of Ending Things, his latest movie. That great revolutionary would, however, be grateful for those among the Damned of the earth who engage his thought without fetishizing it. This is no doubt due, among other things, to one of Euromodern societies’ ultimate fears: their eventual irrelevance. Ironically, in turning his back on dominant cultural forms of recognition in what could be called the Euromodern Age, Fanon’s legacy overflows with it. He wrote to and sought out those among the not wretched but Damned, and, as history has shown, many have and continue to listen. Calls for actions other than revolution continue, but, in the end, they come down to concerns that frustrated Fanon’s contemporary, Martin Luther King, Jr., which compelled him to write Why We Can’t Wait (1964).įanon was not concerned with recognition from hegemons, from dominators, from those whose hardened hearts failed to address the cruelty, degradation, and lies on which much of Euromodern society is built. The vestiges of colonialism, fascism, and racism that continue into the twentieth century reveal the weaknesses of liberal democracies and, indeed, the inadequacies of liberalism. It is ironic because he had hoped the prophetic aspects of his thought were wrong. The impact of Fanon’s thought over the past half century is monumental and ironic. As that work turns seventy in 2022, anniversary reflections on Fanon’s life and thought will continue into another year. Indeed, all of Fanon’s writings are now canonical since their author is now a field of study. As Fanon was also a poet and playwright, his life never fell short of allegory.įanon’s first published book was Peau noir, masques blancs (1952)-that is, Black Skin, White Masks. This year thus marks the sixtieth anniversary of a passing and a birth. His classic work of revolutionary political thought, Les Damnés de la Terre, unfortunately known in the Anglophone world as The Wretched of the Earth, was published little more than a month earlier. Frantz Marguerite Victor Fanon, whose adopted middle name was “Omar” during his participation in the struggle for national liberation in Algeria, died on December 6 th, 1961. The player wants the ogres to knock off their attacks and to grant access to Durgen's Battery. In an example from Obsidian, the player goes to confront an ogre matron. While the village itself and its ogre menace are not specifically your dream quest, the nearby Durgen's Battery calls out to you, promising to reveal the lost secrets of Durgen Steel to whomever is stupidly brave enough to come looking. (New players will want to choose to play the expansion content now or later.) And the story details are already flowing.įrom your stronghold in the main game, pleas for assistance arrive from the village of Stalwart. While it's not barred from early game access, players should bear in mind that the new content can scale all the way up to those have already beat the main game. While the release date for 'Pillars of Eternity: The White March: Part I' remains elusive, Obsidian has described 'Part I' as aspiring to the size of 'Baldur's Gate: Tales of Sword the Coast.' The expansion content is meant for mid to higher level 'Pillars' players. changes, Individual Stealth, and Spell Range Indicators, and Accuracy Indicators will be updates for all owners of 'Pillars of Eternity,' and not just expansion buyers.) For veteran 'Pillars' players, these features are bound to touch a nerve, but hopefully in a good way. These changes are being worked back into the main game, and as it turns out, many enemies have grown a bit wiser and a bit tougher as a result. Enemies will also behave in manner more attune to individual stealth settings. This may sound too powerful, especially for those players willing to infiltrate and backstab enemy positions, but there is a catch. With the expansion, stealth will be handled on a per party member basis, and that means that players can exercise a much larger degree of tactical ability prior to combat, positioning their party members in a way to exploit detection. In 'Pillars,' the party's stealth status was all or nothing, and at first detection, all party members and most AI enemies were drawn into battle. With class-specific party behavior options, players will gain a greater default way to control their party members, and this deeper set of orders can be toggled on or off with click of the UI or hotkey.Įven still, the way that stealth is handled is changing. These talents won't be exactly like if they were primary class talents, but still, the options will be many.Ĭlass importance and distinction is like to increase, however, what with the soulbound weapons, and the new Party AI scripting system. Case in point, the rogue who can frenzy like a barbarian, or summon skeletons. For example, cross-class (aka multi-class) talents will allow players to really get creative with their party members' skills. With the expansion, Obisidian is going to introduce several fan-requested changes that will fundamentally alter how the game is experienced. While these are nice, juicy expansion-esque features, there are others of a greater significance. These weapons will get stronger over time, so that choice is even more important. The expansion will introduce soulbound weapons whose characteristics will change depending on the class of the party member to whom the weapon is bound. It will also add two new companions, the Devil of Caroc and Zahua. The expansion will raise the game's level cap from 12 to 14, and it adds new spells, abilities, and talents for all 11 classes. Yes, this expansion has long been promised, and in a way it represents the final backer promise. For spoilers about the lore, please skip down, because first, I want to cover what's new in 'The White March Part I,' and how it will change the greater game. Having seen the expansion in action and having talked to the team at Obsidian (lead by Producer Brandon Adler) about the new features and lore, I'm comfortable with pointing out just how much more is in the works than just checking the box in terms of a expansion that was promised back in the Kickstarter phase. It's pretty clear that with Obsidian and Paradox Entertainment actively developing for 'Pillars' (as opposed to say, ditching it and moving on to a new project), the idea of expanding the game is being fully explored. It's even more ambitious than the name, 'Pillars of Eternity: The White March: Part I' suggests. Thus, it should come as no surprise that the first expansion for 'Pillars' is most definitely ambitious in aspect and scope. That was before the Kickstarter-rattling ' Pillars of Eternity' hit the market. The idea of a proper game expansion is something of a lost art, what with forgettable, shoddily produced DLC regularly being slapped with the title of 'Expansion.' Of course, isometric RPGs were also considered a lost art not all that long ago. Even Obsidian is surprised at how the base game will change. I’m not sure how general an issue this – hence making this an aside – but if you’re finding your Mac running hot, it may be worth checking out. This did the trick: my fans stayed on low, and Activity Monitor showed the mds processes consuming only tiny amounts of CPU. You can see the amount of system memory being used on your Mac. I added my CrashPlan, MobileSync and Dropbox folders – three specific suggestions I’d found – and then for good measure added some others with frequently-changing content. You can do this by going into System Preferences, clicking the Privacy tab and then drag-and-dropping onto it any directories you don’t want it to index. More Googling led me to a suggestion to remove from Spotlight’s indexing any directories with frequently-changing content, especially those used for online backup. This helped quite a bit, but the mds process still seemed a little greedy. Running ML on Mac mini 2012, with 16GB RAM.always running smoothly even with over a dozen apps running. Top tip: set this going overnight, as the re-indexing takes a while. 18 I thought Mavericks was suppose to utilize RAM memory better, thus run smoother. You can do this in Terminal again: sudo rm -rf /.Spotlight-V100/* También puede encontrar la aplicación en «Aplicaciones -> Utilidades -> Activity Monitor.app». The first tip I found was here, where it suggested deleting the Spotlight database and forcing it to re-index. Para iniciar Activity Monitor, escriba el nombre de la aplicación en Spotlight o Launchpad. So I did some more Googling – after switching Spotlight back on with: sudo mdutil -a -i on CMD-space plus the first letter or two of the app is just too convenient to give up. I keep my most-used apps in the dock, but everything else I habitually launch from Spotlight. I briefly considered leaving Spotlight off until the next OS X update, but that proved too much of a pain. The fans spooled down and all was back to normal. To do this, I went into Terminal and entered: sudo mdutil -a -i off I started by disabling Spotlight altogether to confirm that it was the culprit. These are two processes used by Spotlight when indexing, so I didn’t think too much of it – Spotlight has to do its indexing sometime, right?īut several checks later, these two processes seemed to be helping themselves to significant chunks of CPU on a regular basis, at which point I did some Googling. The only two processes using an unusual amount of CPU were mds and mds_stores. Checking Activity Monitor didn’t seem to be shedding much light on things at first glance. I'm not familiar with the internal workings of Steam, but looking over the NSDistributedNotificationCenter reference (), my guess is that steam is either repeatedly calling - addObserver: or is posting notifications faster than the observers are consuming them.If you’re finding that your Mac fans are running a lot more than they used to, you might want to check out whether a couple of Spotlight processes are consuming more than their fair share of CPU cycles.Įver since the latest Mavericks update, I found that my MacBook Pro seemed to be running hot a lot of the time, with fans ramping up to high levels to cool it. These lines do not appear nearly as frequently if I quit Steam. Running the terminal command sudo dtruss -p while Steam is running displays about a dozen lines per second which mostly look like: Since I've been leaving Steam running in the background, this adds up over a few days to gigabytes of memory, eating up both physical memory and eventually swap space. In particular, as long as Steam is running on my computer, the distnoted process (the distributed notification daemon) leaks a few kilobytes of memory per second. I've been noticing over the last few weeks that something keeps consuming my hard disk space and after a bit of digging it appears I have come across the (or at least a) culprit: Steam. If you plan to set it up and leave it in the same place, the functionality of the clamp may not be as important since you’ll only be attaching it once. If you’re shopping for an architect lamp, it’s important to consider how you’ll be using it. If you have a sewing room or craft table, for instance, you may like the fact that you can move the light around as necessary. You can clamp an architect lamp onto any type of surface with an edge, then direct the light where you need it to go. The adjustable nature of architect lamps makes them popular for a wide range of household uses. This clamp is typically the same color as the rest of the lamp to make sure it better blends with the surrounding décor. This keeps your workspace clear for you to spread your work out, while also giving you the freedom to place it where you want it. Today’s architect lamps often attach to your desk or table using a clamp rather than having a base they set on. Instead, they may be a simple, solid color. You usually won’t find them as decorative as other lamp types. While they all feature that long arm, they tend to be built more for function than looks. The overall look of an architect lamp also sets it apart from others. For that reason, you’ll find the materials are more durable than you might typically find with a lamp. While all lamps are built to burn for hours, architect lamps were traditionally built with the understanding that they need to be able to comfortably burn for hours at a time. With some architect lamps, the shade is wider, while others keep it more in a circular design.Īnother important feature of architect lamps is their burning time. They have a lampshade that helps control the direction of the light, and the shade can vary in size. It has both a head and arm that swivels, letting you control not only the height but also the direction of the light. The most notable feature of an architect lamp is its adjustability. Today, architect lamps can be found on desks and other workspaces, providing easy-to-control lighting for a variety of functions. Technology moved that work to computer software, but the usefulness of architect lamps ensured they remained relevant. At one time, architects spent hours at a drafting table, drawing up blueprints on projects. He added, “But you know they will appreciate their father as they grow older and see what their dad was doing what was best for them.” And know everything is real from their father, it’s a love that prepares them for the real world, which can be a challenge when it comes across tougher.” “But at the same time, I want them to be successful and positioned to achieve and be great leaders in the world. “I operate from a place of love and passion with my kids,” he continued. “It’s great to highlight that in fatherhood overall, but in Black fatherhood especially, because being a Black father in this world isn’t easy.” “I want to show that there are Black fathers who make sure their kids are number one,” he told PEOPLE this month. The All American: Homecoming recently opened up about being a Black father and how his “kids are everything” to him. Additionally, I am reflecting on the importance of my family, community, and how their support and love continue to be the foundation of who I am.” “Every day, but especially today, we remember and honor the sacrifices that Black American people have made in this country, and reaffirm the solidarity that we build on every day. “Happy Juneteenth y’all! This Juneteenth, I am celebrating the resilience, strength, and creativity that are woven into the Black experience,” she said. She recently shared several photos of her kids and family on Juneteenth, writing a little about what the day meant to her. I can’t wait to continue to make even more memories with them □.” Plus, it is still so exciting to see them witness and relate to the diverse characters and perspectives with the representation that many of us did not have as children. “As my kids get older, I cherish these moments even more, and I want to continue to make more of these amazing memories with them. “It was so nice to be able to have this special time with Cree, where we could just hang out and go watch this amazing movie,” she wrote on Instagram later. The parties agree that the restraints set forth in this paragraph are in the best interest of the children.” The documents continued, “Each party is further restrained from permitting his or her new romantic partner from spending overnights when the minor children are with that custodial parent during the first six months of the exclusive relationship. Our cover star, actress, entrepreneur, and mom of two tells us how she will prepare her kids for a return to the classroom and what inspired her to create a new wellness line for moms. They want to make sure their kids are protected from meeting people they aren’t serious about. “Absent agreement to the contrary, each party is restrained from introducing the minor children to a new romantic partner until that party has been in an exclusive relationship with the romantic partner for at least six months,” it read. Documents obtained by PEOPLE explain the details of this arrangement. He also finds that New Balance shoes work well for “hard-to-fit” runners, due to the brand’s wide range of sizes and widths. Halloran recommends the Asics Gel-Kayano for those seeking a stability shoe, and the Brooks Ghost, a longtime neutral favorite that works for a wide range of runners. No matter your arch height or pronation style, the most important thing to look for in any dedicated running is a good fit that feels supportive and comfortable. While the evidence that stability shoes prevent injury isn’t conclusive, a study from a 2016 issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that overpronating runners who wore motion-control shoes suffered fewer injuries over the course of six months than those who wore neutral shoes. Also known as “motion control” sneakers, stability shoes use guide rails, medial posts, and other features built into the midsole to lightly correct that inward roll before it can cause injury. For this group, stability shoes can often help. Runners with flexible or low arches (flatter feet) are more likely to overpronate. Medium-arched runners also tend to do well with a neutral shoe. Because their arches tend to flatten and rise to absorb the shock of landing and taking off, high-arched runners tend to benefit more from neutral shoes that provide built-in stability, says Halloran. Runners with high arches tend to supinate, or roll outward, mid-stride. If you’re not sure what kind of arch you have, this simple test can help. There are three types of arches based on height-low (flat feet), medium (normal), and high. However, we can give some general advice on what to look for, based on your arch height, form, and foot flexibility. No single shoe model or type of shoe works for all runners who share a foot type or running style. In fact, most runners need shoes with good arch support, says Halloran, (though that could mean using a “neutral” shoe). Another indicator you might need more support: If you find excessive wear on the inner side of your running shoes.īut even if you don’t experience pain while running, arch support is still important. If you’re dealing with any of the issues above, you should consider getting more arch support, says Lobkova. “If the alignment is off or shock is inadequately absorbed, certain tendons or ligaments get overworked, leading to overuse injuries.”īy keeping your body in alignment as you run, proper arch support shoes can help alleviate a wide range of overuse issues, including conditions like plantar fasciitis, shin splints, Achilles tendonitis, posterior tibial tendonitis, medial knee pain, lower back pain, and heel pain, says Lobkova. “All that shock at heel contact needs to be adequately transferred up the chain to the ankles, knees, hips, and back,” she says. Add in the fact that each running step generates an impact force around three times your body weight, and you have a recipe for injury, says surgical podiatrist Dr. Overpronation doesn’t just cause issues for your feet-it throws your whole body alignment out of whack. How Arch Support HelpsĪrch support counters overpronation, or the tendency for your foot to roll inward ( or “pronate”) too much during your stride.
